These new prints refer to my memory of language struggles as a young child. I had spoken mostly Spanish at home, so when I arrived at my first-grade reading class I struggled. My recollection is of staring at the ABC cards taped above the chalkboard and trying to remember the sounds those letters were supposed to make. It took me a long time to hear and know the difference between “ch” and “sh”. The laughter of my Anglo classmates still resonates to this day as I often hesitate before saying “ship” or “chip”, “chair” or “share”, out loud.
